Video - Polycystic Kidney Disease Transplant Patient's Story

This video, produced by the UCLA Medical Center Kidney Transplant Program, follows the story of a patient who needed a kidney transplant due to polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

The patient inherited the risk of polycystic kidney disease from her father. Such genetic factors are common in PKD cases. Her PKD was causing severe pain that was similar to the pain suffered by individuals with kidney stones.

PKD affects approximately one individual in every five hundred in the United States. It is dangerous because it can often lead to kidney failure.

This video takes you right inside the operating room during the procedure. Because of its graphic nature, some viewers may feel somewhat uncomfortable watching this video.
