Kidney Surgery

For many years, kidney surgery was done "the old fashioned way." A surgeon would open a rather large incision, approximately a foot long, in the abdominal area. This type of surgery also required partial removal of a rib.

Because of the complexity of the procedure, there was always a long hospital stay and also a lengthy recovery period.

But recently, surgeons have begun using a laparoscope more frequently. A laparoscope is a long tube-like instrument that allows the surgeon to work inside the body through a series of small incisions rather than one large one. This type of surgery allows for a much quicker recovery because there is considerably less damage to the area around the kidney.
