Diabetes and Kidney Problems
As detailed elsewhere on this website, one of the most
frequent--and dangerous--causes of kidney problems is diabetes.
Here are some quick tips for preventing diabetes kidney problems, gathered from a number of
reliable sources through online publications:
Carefully monitor your blood glucose level. Blood glucose level, or blood sugar level, tellsyou
how much sugar is present in your system. Failure to maintain a normal range can contribute to kidney failure. If
you have concerns, ask your doctor about the HbA1c test, which is a lab test to determine average blood glucose
over a period of two to three months.
Maintain a healthy blood pressure. High blood pressure, or hypertension, damages tissue in the kidneys and causes
kidney failure. Ask your doctor about ACE inhibitor medications. This type pf medication helps control blood
pressure. An ACE inhibitor called Capoten (the generic name is captopril) has been approved by the US Food and Drug
Administration to protect the kidneys in people with diabetes.
Schedule a yearly physical that includes a urinalysis. This will help your doctor spot anything
that's not normal. Be sure to have any other kidney tests done that your doctor recommends.
